Senators, May 2010 (re Bill C-311)

We are writing to ask you to support Bill C-311, the Climate Change Accountability Act, recently adopted in the House of Commons. You will know that this bill was studied extensively in committee. It has wide support from environmental experts and voluntary organizations. It is not, in short, a matter where we need long, sobre, second thought.
Climate change is a present reality and threat. It is a disgrace that Canada as a nation does not have a serious greenhouse gas reduction plan. We want our country to act responsibly in the world, as it has on so many matters in the past. We are embarrassed by the (just) criticism of President Calderon of Mexico on our failure to show such leadership.

Bill C-311 calls for a medium-range reduction of 25% by 2020, and 80% by 2050, based on 1990 levels. Indeed, the world’s climate scientists tell us that this is the minimum needed to deal with the threat of runaway climate change.
